I am engaged to a 20 year old student that lives with her parents in Kiev. My engagement began last month and her parents are now telling me when I call by phone that I should be sending monthly support payments. They are telling me this this customary. My question is: How customary is this really, has anyone else made such payments, and how much is expected to be sent?
As an aside I should also mention that I've already bought her expensive jewellry in addition to her engagement and I've reimbursed her for what seems to me excessive charges for translation and preparation of fiancee visa documents (i.e. ~$1000).
You can send her a MAXIMUM of $150 for monthly expenses since you are engaged. If she or her family claim that is not enough, then there is a scam going on to drain you for cash and enrich their lives.
